🌊 Marine Weather SMS Service

Daryl's Super-Cool On-demand marine weather information delivered by SMS

About This Service

This project provides marine weather information through SMS text messages. Users can send a request via SMS and receive marine weather conditions in response.

The service is designed for boaters or anyone who needs quick weather information when internet access may be limited.

This is a personal, non-commercial project.

How It Works

  1. User sends an SMS request to the service number.
  2. The system processes the request.
  3. The system sends a reply containing the requested weather information.

All messages sent by the system are direct responses to requests initiated by the user.

Example Commands

Example SMS commands:

wx: Strait of Georgia
wx: Pam Rocks
wx: Howe Sound

The system will respond with relevant marine weather data depending on the request.

Example Message Interaction

Below is an example of how the service works:

User wx: Strait of Georgiat

Service Marine Forecast: Strait of Georgia
Wind: NW 15 knots
Wave height: 1.2m
Conditions: Moderate

Messages are only sent as direct responses to user-initiated requests.

Opt-In and Consent

The service has a two part opt-in mechanism:

step 1:

Users send an SMS to the service with the text "wx: subscribe" The service replies with a message:
"You are requesting to subscribe to Daryl's Super Cool Weather texting service.
By replying "Yes" to this message you are agreeing to receive SMS messages from this service."

Users then can send a reply with "Yes" and will become registered on the service.

Step 2:

Registered users will only receive messages from the service in response to requests that they make via SMS. For example, the user can send "wx: Strait of Georgia" and the service will reply with weather information for the Strait of Georgia.

Example

User → wx: Strait of Georgia Service → Marine Forecast: Strait of Georgia Wind: NW 15 knots Wave height: 1.2m

The application does not send recurring alerts, marketing messages, promotional content, or unsolicited outbound messages.

Messaging Flow
